Medicinal Uses of Chloramphenicol

  Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that can be used to treat a variety of bacterial illnesses. Use as an eye ointment to treat conjunctivitis is one example. It is used orally or intravenously to treat meningitis, plague, cholera, and typhoid fever. It is only suggested for use by mouth or injection when safer antibiotics are unavailable. During treatment, blood levels of the medicine and blood cell levels should be checked every two days.   Bone marrow suppression, nausea, and diarrhoea are common adverse effects. Suppression of the bone marrow may end in death. Treatment duration should be kept as short as possible to minimise the likelihood of negative effects. People with liver or kidney disease may require lesser doses. Gray infant syndrome, which causes a large stomach and low blood pressure in young children, can develop.
