Medicinal Uses & Side effects of Ceftriaxone
Ceftriaxone, widely known as Rocephin, is an
antibiotic medicine used to treat a wide range of infections caused by various
bacterias. Meningitis, middle ear infections, pneumonia, endocarditis, bone and
joint infections, skin infections, intra-abdominal infections, gonorrhoea,
urinary tract infections, and pelvic inflammatory disease are examples of
these. It is also used to try to avoid infection before surgery and after a
bite wound. Ceftriaxone can be administered through injection into a vein or a
muscle.
Pain at the injection site and allergic reactions are
common adverse effects. Other potential side effects include
C.difficile-associated diarrhoea, hemolytic anaemia, gallbladder illness, and
convulsions. It is not suggested for people who have had anaphylaxis to
penicillin, but it can be used for people who have had lesser responses. The
intravenous form should not be used in conjunction with intravenous calcium.
There is preliminary evidence that ceftriaxone is safe to use during pregnancy
and nursing. It is a third-generation cephalosporin that prevents bacteria from
forming a cell wall.

Medicinal Use:
Ceftriaxone and other third-generation antibiotics are
used to treat organisms that are resistant to a wide range of existing
antibiotics. Ceftriaxone should not be used to treat Enterobacter infections
due to emerging resistance. It is critical to evaluate the susceptibility of
the bacteria before employing ceftriaxone. If sepsis is suspected, empiric
therapy may be started before susceptibility testing.
Medical uses include:

infections
● acute bacterial otitis media

Ceftriaxone is also used to treat bacterial meningitis
caused by pneumococci, meningococci, Haemophilus influenzae, and
"sensitive enteric Gram-negative rods, but not Listeria
monocytogenes."
Ceftriaxone was formerly recommended by the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the treatment of uncomplicated
gonorrhoea in combination with doxycycline or azithromycin. The guideline has
been revised to mono-antibiotic therapy with a higher dose of ceftriaxone due
to the greater risk of acquiring azithromycin resistant strains and the high
efficacy of higher doses of ceftriaxone.
Common side effects:
● Injection site reactions
(swelling, or soreness)
● Eosinophilia
● Increased blood platelets
● Diarrhoea
● Elevated liver transaminases
